POP SONNETS CHALLENGE
This assignment is designed for 9th-10th grades, but can be adapted for 11th-12th grades.
Students choose one of eight sonnets written in Shakespearean language. They must then use their knowledge of Shakespearean language to "translate" the sonnet they have chosen, line by line, into everyday English. Once the sonnet is "translated," students will try to identify which popular song is represented by that sonnet.
This activity requires students to put their knowledge of Shakespearean language to use, practicing the decoding skills that will be necessary while reading Shakespeare's plays and sonnets. I used this activity to familiarize 9th graders with Shakespeare before reading Romeo & Juliet.
The process of decoding sonnets and identifying popular songs is an entertaining way to practice reading Shakespearean language, and is effective in removing students' affective filter and general apprehension when first reading Shakespeare.
