Danielle Hughes

I began my career teaching at San Antonio High School in Claremont, CA, near Los Angeles. There, I spent two exhilirating years as part of a driven, collaborative team, instructing at-risk 7th-12th graders and making significant gains in student performance; at the end of my second year, student writing scores were at an all-time high. During my time at SAHS, I developed my teaching skills through intensive work in planning high-interest lessons, differentiating instruction, classroom management, data analysis, and recursive teaching.

I moved to Pennsylvania in June of 2013 and began substitute teaching while awaiting an opening in a nearby district. During the 2014-2015 school year, I served two back-to-back long-term substitute positions for English teachers at Brookville Area Jr.-Sr. High School (9th and 11th grades), where I had the freedom to create and implement my own lessons to accomplish curriculum goals.

This is my second year teaching 7th grade at DuBois Area Middle School. I have relished the opportunity to creatively contribute to the existing curriculum through developing fresh units and creating new ways for students to access content. I have regularly shared my ideas and documents with my department, and have been excited to see how it has benefited our students. Over the course of my first year at DAMS, my grade-level department and I were able to guide our students to a 10% increase over the 2013-2014 ELA PSSA scores.

The 2016-2017 school year marks my 5th year of teaching. At this point in my career, I have worked through the kinks of being a "new teacher," and as such, I am confident and ready to hit the ground running in whatever position presents itself. I look forward to being a productive, innovative, and collaborative member of my next team.
