ARGUMENTATIVE
RESEARCH PROJECT
This project is designed for 7th grade, but can be adjusted for any secondary grade level.
Students work individually to research a controversial topic that affects today's society (for example, gun control, illegal immigration, capital punishment, etc.). Each student will choose to represent one side of a chosen issue, and will compete against another student who holds an opposing viewpoint on that topic. Each student is responsible for finding relevant information, including that in support of the opposing viewpoint, to prove his/her viewpoint.

Students use the information they've found during research to compile an argumentative essay, including at least two arguments and a counterargument.

Students also participate in a debate, in which they argue their opinions, backed by their research and supported by visual aids, in a point-by-point discussion; this includes opportunities for rebuttal and for audience-based evaluation of presented arguments.
